Cody Slater

MD-PhD Student

Cody has finished three years of medical school at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and is completing his PhD in the Laboratory for Neural Engineering and Control. His research interests are focused on the interaction and behavioral impact of multiple neurotransmitter systems, with a particular focus on how to gain closed-loop control of the dynamical system that results from the interplay of these chemicals. He is currently working on methods that can couple programmable, synthetic neurobiology with single-cell sequencing and in-vivo neural recordings to understand how the genomic landscape gives rise to the dynamic information processing and storage capabilities of the brain.

His long-term goal is to improve the functionality and impact of brain-machine-interfaces in a variety of clinical settings, specifically in neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases.

Prior to beginning medical school in 2018, Cody worked for two years as an engineer on spacecraft propulsion systems and ground based radar at MIT.
